Title: Course in Introduction to Autism Awareness and Support
Location: US
Company: Education
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that may impair a person's ability to communicate with other people and interact with the outside world. This course explores the experiences of people on the autism spectrum. It starts by defining ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder’ (ASD) and identifies the signs and symptoms of autism. We outline the suspected causes and types of autism and break down various approaches used to help individuals particularly children with autism.
Play forms an essential component of a child's growth and development. This course shows you what play looks like among children with autism and compares it to the play behaviour of children unaffected by the disorder. We discuss social skills and explain how parents may help children with autism to develop them. We then establish the importance of a person-centred strategy. The course then teaches you how ASD is detected and diagnosed in both adults and children.
Children with autism possess considerable communication skills and talents but sometimes require extra effort to help them develop these skills. We explain how children and adults with autism communicate and provide some autism communication strategies. We also discuss cognitive styles, functions and challenging autistic behaviours. Our final section examines the role of public health campaigns in helping those on the autism spectrum by increasing autism awareness. We discuss World Autism Awareness Day and the Autism Awareness Campaign in the UK. Sign up to learn how to support people with ASD and help them to function and develop with a person-centred approach.
