Job Description

Considering Fostering?

Children and young people need to be cared for away from home for very varied and complex reasons; Some need to be away for a small number of hours or days while some need a permanent alternative where they can live until they are legally and developmentally ready to move on.

Foster care in general needs a boost. The process of making relationships in fostering is referred to as 'matching'. Sometimes, children have to move home just because there is not a suitable long term home for them and the matching could not be done properly. The Fostering Network estimates that nationally we need 9000 more foster carers to have more success in the matching process. The good news is that as a region, the north east of England is closest to having enough foster carers! Estimates suggesting we need to recruit 475 homes to make sure our children are well placed. Here in our small agency in Durham we are really inspired by this and hope that if you are considering fostering that you will find out more information - we will not place any expectation on you.

Within Orchard Care we would like to offer homes to a wide range of children and young people. Young people may be any age from 0 to 17. They may:

- Need to be fostered with their siblings - families can be split up just because the foster homes available don't have enough bedrooms

- Need preparation for independent living - when they turn 18 they will usually need to look after themselves

- Need help, support and guidance regarding their transition into adulthood

- Present challenging behaviour

- Require palliative/nursing care in relation to their complex medical needs

- Have a short life expectancy

- Have a physical disability

- Have a learning disability or special educational needs

- Be autistic

- Come from an ethnic minority background
