Durham County Council is the countywide local authority for County Durham in the North East of England. We operate in a two-tier system of local government and work closely with the seven district and borough councils in the County.
County Durham itself, is a large, predominantly rural county with a proud industrial heritage. It is located between the North Pennines to the west, the North Sea to the east and the major settlements of Tyne and Wear and Teesside to the north and south. The County has over 200 towns and villages and a population of over 490,000.
