Alnwick District in Northumberland is at the heart of England’s most unspoilt region. The District is bordered on the east by 20 miles of spectacular coastline, officially designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty and a substantial area of land in the western part of the District falls within the Northumberland National Park. Tourism and agriculture are an integral part of the area and many outdoor activities are available such as golf, riding, fishing, walking and water sports.
On 1 April 1974 Alnwick District Council was created from the first countrywide reorganisation of local government since the end of the nineteenth century. Alnwick District Council was formed from the combination of the Rural District Councils of Alnwick and Rothbury and the Urban District Councils of Alnwick and Amble. Today, the District has a population of approximately 30,300 and covers an area of 267,000 acres.
In Northumberland there is a two tier system of local government, made up of Northumberland County Council and four District and two Borough Councils who provide a large range of services. Within Alnwick District there are 37 Parish Councils who are concerned with the maintenance and improvement of local amenities.
