Headteacher - Northumberland County Council

Closing Date: 24 Jun 2013 12:00
Reference: ET4157X
Location: Branton First School, Alnwick
Salary: Leadership Scale L6 – L12

Branton First School
Branton
Alnwick
NE66 4JF

Tel: 01665 578225

Secondment Opportunity For a Headteacher.

Required from 01 January 2014.

The current Headteacher at Branton Community First School will be retiring from the post in December 2013. As you may be aware, this traditionally is a very small rural first school, currently 8 pupils on roll in main school. In addition the school has recently established and developed a Community Powers Nursery provision with 4 children attending this year, three of whom move to reception in September. There are a similar number expected to enter nursery in each of the following two or three years with fewer children leaving at the upper end of the school which should therefore see the overall pupil numbers increase steadily.

The school was inspected by Ofsted in March of this year and received a good overall rating with behaviour and the safety and wellbeing of the pupils being viewed as outstanding. The parents and pupils are all very happy with the school and it is incredibly well supported by the local community which extends well into the Northumberland National Park. The governors are very focused on maintaining and improving upon the results of this recent inspection and on the caring family ethos and community values of the school continuing.

They take very seriously the position they now find themselves in, with the planned retirement of the current headteacher, and wish to be certain they find a solution which provides the best long-term future of the school whilst maintaining current high standards of provision for the pupils. The main purpose of this course of action is to allow Governors time to consider options around the future leadership of the school. They are intent on reaching a solution within the year and they are committed to a one-year, fixed term secondment which they hope may be attractive to those currently looking to develop their leadership skills and who would see this as a good career development opportunity.

Governors have asked the Local Authority to support them in securing the leadership of the school from January 2014. They have asked the Local Authority to assist them in seeking to find an Acting Headteacher to run the school from January to December 2014. We would look to arrange this on a secondment basis, with Branton First School meeting the costs of the secondment. You should be aware that there is a substantial teaching commitment involved.

Any interested teacher currently working in a Northumberland school can apply (please note that NPQH is a desirable, but not essential criteria) but they must seek and obtain the support of their Headteacher and Governors before making an application. Should they wish to make an appointment to visit the school please contact David Wilson (01670 622724) in the first instance.
